A shooting star reached heavenward on Sunday, November 20, 2011, and its glow can still be seen.

Garrett Uekman's Story

Garrett was a dedicated student and a talented athlete. He attended Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic School in North Little Rock and graduated from Little Rock Catholic High School for Boys in 2010. Like many young men, Garrett dreamed of playing college football; and in the spring of his senior year, he signed with the Arkansas Razorbacks as a tight end.

He worked tirelessly to become a superior athlete and dedicated student while at the University of Arkansas. Uekman, a top 10 Arkansas recruit, recorded 56 catches for 600 yards as a senior at Catholic High. After redshirting his freshman year at the U of A, Uekman saw action in 9 games in 2011, including the Mississippi State game played at War Memorial before family and friends. Sadly, that game was Garrett's final Razorback game. He died suddenly the next day on Sunday, November 20, 2011 of an enlarged heart.

Out of their grief, friends and family came together to create a non-profit foundation in his memory to raise funds for heart disease education and to fund scholarships for deserving student athletes. Last October, the Foundation pledged $100,000 to fund an endowed memorial scholarship within Razorback Athletics to honor Garrett's memory. When the scholarship is fully funded, a Razorback student athlete will be recognized each year in perpetuity.
